Lightweight patients are vulnerable to developing a pressure injury as they have minimal body fat (the body’s natural protection against pressure injuries). With reduced fat, pressure from bony prominences is much more damaging, leading to the development of pressure injuries a lot quicker.
Mattresses for paediatric clients need to offer pressure care appropriate for a lightweight, as well as providing safety. Safety and entrapment is a key concern with paediatric clients.

Medium Risk Pressure Care
Mattresses designed for paediatric and lightweight clients with a medium risk of pressure injury are typically constructed with graded premium quality foams for comfort, pressure redistribution and support – including an immersion interface layer such as Airoform Memory. For lightweight patients, it is important to avoid any risk of over-immersion and entrapment. Any mattress being used for paediatric or lightweight clients should have firm Strengthened Sides for reinforcement and support. The therapeutic and safe weight loading is tested on all Forté mattresses using RESNA weight loading tests methods and the RESNA dummy.

High Risk Pressure Care – Static Mattresses
Paediatric and Lightweight clients have particularly frail skin and minimal body fat which means they are particularly susceptible to developing a pressure injury. As such paediatric and lightweight clients mostly require a mattress that will offer a high level of pressure care as well as enhanced comfort.

Very High Risk Pressure Care – Air Systems
Paediatric and Lightweight Individuals with a very high risk of obtaining a pressure injury, or have a current pressure injury, require a very high level of care. Air mattress systems are an example, typically providing the highest level of care. Air can be used on a mattress in a static/reactive or alternating/active form.
Air is naturally one of the most flexible and conforming substances, making it a very effective means of immersing and enveloping an individual- especially static air. Alternating air is required for the most at risk individuals. A powered support surface uses an external pump unit and actively onloads/offloads pressure to promote blood flow and ensure pressure is relieved periodically on every part of the body.

Yes, if there are no exposed wires and it operates at below 60°C. Please keep pressure care in mind however, consulting with your doctor or healthcare professional first.
- Can your mattresses be made to a custom size?

Yes, Forté can customise any mattress to suit any bed platform. Customised items will be more expensive than standard sizing and do take longer through production.
- Can I trial your mattresses?
