Long-term care is typically geared toward individuals who have a progressive or chronic health condition that requires ongoing care or assistance. Long-term care may be necessary with conditions like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease or after a stroke. Some patients are eventually able to discontinue long-term care, but for many, it will be needed for life.
In many cases, the needs of patients receiving long-term care will increase over time as their condition worsens, or they will never be able to live without assistance again. Like short-term care, long-term care can be provided in a patient’s home or it can be provided in a long-term care facility. It may be skilled or unskilled, although long-term care is more likely to involve skilled care to manage a chronic or progressive condition.
The goal of long-term care is typically preserving the patient’s quality of life and health as much as possible. When delivered in a facility, long-term care often includes amenities to help with these goals such as social activities, salon services, and transportation.
Because patients who need long-term care are typically struggling with a chronic, debilitating, and/or progressive condition, additional services are typically necessary. Comprehensive services are often provided and may include personal care, therapeutic, and medical care.
Selecting equipment for homecare clients is different to the facility environment. Homecare environments have less regulations in relation to infection control and size. Homecare clients also tend to have more choice in relation to style and sizing.

Palliative Care and Pain Management
Pain Management and Palliative Care requirements must be specifically considered to ensure patients suffering from these conditions receive optimal care.
The support surface plays a central role in effective pain management as a poorly performing mattress can result in significant disturbance, lack of sleep and traumatic situations for the care giver and patient alike.
Palliative care poses special nursing challenges, within many facilities, patients in Palliative care are unable to get out of bed.
It is easy to become focused on pressure injury prevention and overlook comprehensive care planning that considers pain management in critical care and palliative scenarios. Common therapy practice and mattress selection for skin integrity is for many patients a contributing factor to increased pain. This begins a viscous circle which has inevitable implications on skin integrity.

Spinal and Brain Injury
Spinal cord and brain injuries are complex and serious medical conditions that have the power to severely impact a person’s physical functionality, as well as socioeconomic and psychological health. Clients with spinal and brain injuries require rehabilitation and intervention to assist in the prevention and healing of secondary medical concerns, such as pressure injuries, and to improve and address matters of health-related quality of life.
Spinal cord and brain injuries both lead to immobility and loss of sensation which means these clients are at a high to very high risk of obtaining a pressure injury. As such high level pressure care mattresses that reduce and relieving pressure must be selected to ensure protection should progression in the individual’s condition occur.

Degenerative Conditions
Often long term and home care clients have degenerative conditions. It is important when selecting a mattress to ensure the mattress will support and protect your client today and through the rest of their medical journey. Typically, degenerative conditions worsen, so it is best to select a mattress that offers a higher level of care than the client currently requires.
A degenerative or chronic condition is one that has been present for six months or longer. Not all conditions will lead to disability. However, there are a number of chronic or degenerative conditions that can have a significant effect on a person’s ability to get around and take care of themselves. Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer disease are examples.

Homecare
Care in the home is very different to facilities as there are less guidelines and standards that must be met – specifically relating to infection control and sizing. Homecare mattresses are typically wider than a single size and often as wide as king. Homecare clients often have the choice of selecting a mattress with a luxury Woven Pressure Care homecare cover instead of a waterproof polyurethane cover when infection control and incontinence is not a concern.

Yes, if there are no exposed wires and it operates at below 60°C. Please keep pressure care in mind however, consulting with your doctor or healthcare professional first.
- Can your mattresses be made to a custom size?

Yes, Forté can customise any mattress to suit any bed platform. Customised items will be more expensive than standard sizing and do take longer through production.
