STAFF AND PATIENT SAFETY
In any healthcare environment, staff and patient safety is a pivotal concern. By ensuring correct, clear and TGA compliant printing on medical equipment, staff and patient safety can be enhanced. Examples of important information to be printed on a mattress include:
- Safe and Therapeutic Weight Loading – to ensure the mattress being used is designed to provide therapy and support for the specific individual using it. If a high care mattress is being used for an individual outside of its Therapeutic Weight Loading, the support surface will not provide the high care it was designed to offer.
- Product Weight – for care staff handling a mattress It is important they know the weight of the mattress before handling it incorrectly
- Cleaning and Care instructions – to prevent the equipment from being cleaned or handled incorrectly causing damage to the product and/or patient
- Size – ensures the support surface will fit the bed base without risk of entrapment or falls.
WHAT IS THE TGA?
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is the medicine and therapeutic regulatory agency of the Australian Government which enhances the health of the Australian community through effective and timely regulation of therapeutic goods. As part of the Department of Health, the TGA regulates the quality, supply and advertising of medicines, pathology devices, medical devices, blood products and most other therapeutics.
Almost any product for which therapeutic claims are made must be entered in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) before it can be supplied in Australia.
The TGA is responsible for regulating the supply, import, export, manufacturing and advertising of therapeutic goods. The TGA regulates therapeutic goods through pre-market assessment, post-market monitoring and enforcement of standards, licensing of Australian manufacturers and verifying overseas manufacturers’ compliance with the same standards as their Australian counterparts
